Pre-Surgical Rehabilitation

Pre-surgical rehabilitation is a great way to set yourself up for post-surgical success. Mastectomies and lumpectomies are a common portion of the overall treatment for breast cancer. However, the effects from surgery can be life-altering for some individuals; this includes lymphedema, axillary cording, loss of shoulder range of motion and pain.

At your pre-surgical appointment baseline measurements of your arms will be taken, including circumferential measurements, shoulder range of motion and generalized strength. These measurements can then be referred to if treatment is ever needed in the future.

Extensive education will then be provided on prevention. This includes:

  • signs and symptoms of lymphedema, cording and infection

  • scar massage

  • positioning for comfort

  • posture

  • skin and nail care

  • range of motion and resistive exercises

After surgery it is recommended to follow-up at the following intervals to make sure swelling and other issues are being identified early. Follow-up visits may be recommended more frequently if early stage lymphedema or axillary cording is identified:

  • 3 weeks post-operative

  • 6 weeks post-operative

  • 3 months post-operative

  • 6 months post-operative

  • 12 months post-operative
